Derbyshire Childrens Holiday Centre

For over 130 years, Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre has provided children across the county with a week-long holiday at thier specialist residential centre on the seafront in Skegness…

They provide disadvantaged youngsters with a seaside break they might never receive, helping with their education and self-esteem; making friends and memories that last a lifetime. They rely solely on financial donations from the public and on those who give up their time to help. Whish is why events such as SkegVegas100 are so important.

A holiday is something that many of us take for granted, but for the children who use the centre it is a rarity, even a one-off. Many of them have never been away, and may have no prospect of doing so.

Just a week away at the Centre can make a huge difference.

It gives the youngsters time and space to relax, make new friends and enjoy themselves in a supportive and structured environment, and in the care of our fully trained staff.

Recognised by the Local Education Authority as providing a Secondary Educational Experience as part of the overall education of the children who attend, it contributes to their personal and social development, giving them confidence and self-esteem, as well as providing memories that last a lifetime. For a week, they can just enjoy being on holiday.

For their parents, guardians or carers too, it offers some important respite time, safe in the knowledge that the children are being well looked after.

DCHC, established in 1891, provides 660 holiday places per season, which runs between April and October.

Derby Kids Camp

Derby Kids’ Camp is an entirely volunteer-run charity which provides free holidays for over 300 of Derbyshire’s most deserving children each year.

These children face huge challenges in their day-to-day lives: from poverty to bereavement; social interaction difficulties and the challenges of being a young carer. Their week at Derby Kids’ Camp gives them the chance to try out new activities, explore new surroundings, make new friends – and more importantly, enjoy being a kid!

Their holidays help to build children’s confidence and independence: giving children the opportunity to enjoy new experiences and leave with lifelong memories of an amazing childhood holiday!

One of our big aims at Derby Kids’ Camp is to give children the chance to try out something new. For many children, staying in a tent – or even away from home – for the first time is a massive experience. With a week jam-packed full of crafts, music, sports, walks, campfires, magicians, swimming, animals, playgrounds and much more – there’s something to suit every personality, and plenty of opportunity to try something different!

Children are nominated by around 60 local primary schools. There aren’t any specific criteria – they simply ask that schools nominate the kids who are most in need of a break. Over the years, this has been for a huge variety of reasons, including challenges at home; children living in poverty; and to provide respite for families.
